1798 $5 Large Eagle, Large 8, 14 Star Reverse AU55 PCGS. Breen-6427, BD-3, R.5. This is a rare die marriage that doubles as an important Guide Book variety, placing additional emphasis on its desirability. Both sides have rich green-gold color with hints of orange toning, and the obverse and reverse fields are both reflective and minimally abraded. Both dies show signs of die lapping, and the reverse has several die cracks representing what is probably the terminal die state of the die. As this piece differs from the "terminal die state" described by John Dannreuther, an accounting of the various die cracks is included below. Dannreuther stated a relevant problem about die state records for early gold coins: "It is difficult to describe states or stages if the coins are so rare that there are almost no coins on which to base the descriptions!"
The obverse die appears to be perfect, although evidence suggests that this die may have been lightly lapped. The reverse has multiple cracks or branch cracks, and we cannot be certain the order that they appeared: a curving crack from the border to the final A crosses the branch, shield, scroll, star 6, and bisects the upright of F to the border; a branch up to the left crosses the breast feathers and scroll to stars 13, 7, and 1; a secondary branch extends down through the crossbars to the second vertical stripe, the arrow butts, and the lower border; a tertiary branch extends upward through the eagle's head, stars 10 and 4, cloud 5, and the final S to the border.
From The Temecula Collection, Part Two.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
