1837 $5 MS64 PCGS. Breen-6512, Large Date, Large 5, McCloskey 2-B, R.3. One of three die marriages known for this scarcer date, McCloskey 2-B is identified by a wide TAT and a narrow TES in STATES. Certified in a prior generation green label holder, this lovely near-Gem is notable for its exceptional strike. The eagle's shield and the hair curls near the ear are found weak on most survivors of the type, but on the present piece they are nearly fully struck. The stars and denticles are also primarily needle-sharp. The rich canary-gold color is undeniably original, and mint luster rolls unimpeded throughout the fields. The reverse is well preserved, and the obverse has only faint luster grazes in addition to an unobtrusive pinscratch beneath the chin. Classic Half Eagles are notoriously scarce in Mint State, let alone this close to full Gem. Population: 15 in 64, 3 finer (1/05). Lot:7799
