1837<$5> MS63 PCGS. Large Date, Large 5, Breen-6512, McCloskey 2-B, R.3. The 1837 is the scarcest Philadelphia Mint issue of the type. Only three die marriages are known. Breen stated that McCloskey 2-B has a large 5 in the denomination, but there is little actual difference in size versus the Small 5 variety (McCloskey 1-A). The 5 is nicely repunched however, which provides definitive attribution for higher grade examples. This clean yellow-gold representative has ample luster and good eye appeal. The strike is exceptionally sharp for the Classic type. On most pieces, the hair is softly defined northwest of Liberty's ear and on portions of the shield. However, the present coin is refreshingly bold, across both major devices as well as the peripheral stars and dentils. Encapsulated in a green label holder.
From The Derrick Snider Collection.
