<B>1837 $5 MS61 NGC.</B></I> Large Date, Large 5, Breen-6512, McCloskey 2-B, R.3. Garrett and Guth, in their <I>Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins 1795-1933,</B></I> note that despite this issue's mintage of over 200,000 pieces, numerical and anecdotal evidence exposes it as elusive. They also term Mint State issues "decidedly rare." This radiant example represents the series nicely. Though some softness is noted on the obverse devices, the reverse is sharp, and both sides display strong luster. Numerous light marks and a couple of abrasions on Liberty's cheek and neck account for the grade. Housed in a prior generation holder.
