1837<$5> MS61 NGC. Breen-6513, Small Date, McCloskey 3-C, R.4. Brilliant and lustrous. Most design features are sharp save for a few hair strands at Liberty's temple and some of the eagle's plumage details to the left of the shield. A fine line crossing the eagle's shield was probably all that prevented NGC from assigning the MS63 designation. This variety is listed as "very rare" in Walter Breen's Complete Encyclopedia and is distinguished by a single forelock on Liberty's portrait and no berry on the reverse laurel branch. Walter Breen noted "Usually in low grades; only 2 Uncs. Seen." The discovery of the variety is attributed to the famous numismatist of yesteryear John H. Clapp.
