<B>(1837-42) G$1 C. Bechtler Dollar, N Reversed AU53 PCGS.</B></I> K-4, R.4. According to Don Kagin's <I>Private Gold Coins and Patterns of the United States </B></I>(page 243)<I>, </B></I>the R.4 rating of this Bechtler variety corresponds roughly to a surviving population of between 76 and 200 pieces. That estimate is compatible with the 117 pieces currently graded by NGC and PCGS combined (7/07). This example is mildly prooflike, with a mixture of mint-green and terra cotta toning on both sides. The planchet seems to be slightly uneven. The only noteworthy abrasion is a shallow scratch that extends from near 5 o'clock on the obverse border up to the right side of G.
