(1837-42) $5 C. Bechtler Five Dollar, 134G, With Star AU55 PCGS. K-20, R.4. A large star is centered under 134. G. on this very scarce coin, from the Fifth Series of Christopher Bechtler coinage with 21 CARATS underneath (with inverted V's for the A's). The Bechtlers were actually quite advanced, predating the U.S. Mint by 18 years in their issuance of gold dollars, and far ahead of most private gold minters in producing gold coins that were well respected and circulated freely. Kagin writes that the three different locations on the five dollar gold coins--NORTH CAROLINA GOLD, CAROLINA GOLD, and GEORGIA GOLD--in reality designate three different degrees of fineness, regardless of where the gold was mined.
This piece shows just light wear at the rims on each side, with much luster remaining and pretty green-gold coloration. Listed on page 346 of the 2007 Guide Book.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
