The Bechtlers appear to have been eminently practical, as they managed to produce a much-needed circulation gold dollar coinage many years before the Mint, and all of their gold coinage was well accepted by the local populace. Although the Mint experimented with gold dollar patterns as early as 1836, it was 1849 before the successful launch of the Federal issue. There are several prominent gouges near the rim on each side but more so on the reverse, and a couple of rim bumps. Otherwise, though, muted mint luster appears, and there are few small abrasions, only the several scattered large ones noted. The reverse die is rotated about 130 degrees clockwise from normal coin turn.
