(1837-42)<$5> C. Bechtler Five Dollar, 134G, With Star MS61 NGC. Kagin-20, R.4. Iridescent lime and apricot hues adorn this mostly lustrous Bechtler five dollar piece. A small retained lamination on the reverse above the C initial, and another of even lesser interest through the O in CAROLINA, are both as produced and do not affect the technical grade. A few tiny marks are present, but these are fewer than anticipated for the grade. For the Kagin-20 variety, Bechtler increased the fineness to 21 carats and reduced the weight slightly to retain the same bullion value. While the privately produced Bechtler gold pieces were commonly encountered in the South during the 1830s and 1840s, most were eventually melted, and all five dollar varieties are rare today.
