(1837-42) $2 1/2 C. Bechtler Quarter Eagle, 67G. 21C. MS62 PCGS. K-10, R.5. Less than 200 Bechtler $2.50 gold pieces still exist today, based on the rarity ratings provided by Don Kagin in 1981. It is doubtful that the number is much higher today. The Kagin-10 variety is easily the most plentiful of the nine different varieties, representing nearly half of the existing population for this denomination.
This example is a late die state with a large obverse rim break over the E in BECHTLER. It is a satiny Mint State piece with rich green and rose-gold toning. As no finer pieces have been certified by NGC or PCGS, this example may possibly qualify as the finest known of the variety. Listed on page 349 of the 2008 Guide Book. Population: 3 in 62, 0 finer (6/07).
From The Stephen L.
