(1837-42) $2 1/2 C. Bechtler Quarter Eagle, 64G. 22C. MS62 NGC. K-11, R.6. Breen-7756. GEORGIA GOLD, uneven 22. From the sixth series of Bechtler coinage. The reverse die is rotated counterclockwise by nearly 90 degrees, as usual. The Bechtler coins that bear the words GEORGIA GOLD are widely believed to contain a higher fineness of gold metal (22 carats) than those stamped with NORTH CAROLINA or just CAROLINA. This Mint State example is dramatically toned in shades of purple-violet and lime-gold. The fields are prooflike beneath this deep patina. Minor pinscratches are noted on each side. This coin is tied with two others as one of the finest-graded at NGC. PCGS has not certified an example of this Bechtler variety any higher than MS61. Listed on page 349 of the 2008 Guide Book. Census: 3 in 62, 0 finer (6/07).
From The Stephen L.
