(1837-42) $2 1/2 C. Bechtler Quarter Eagle, 64G. Even 22C. MS61 PCGS. K-12, High R.6. Not identified as the scarcer Even 22C variety on the PCGS holder. This example was coined in a later series of Christopher Bechtler gold pieces, probably around the same time as the Charlotte and Dahlonega Mints began operations. Walter Breen identified seven issuing periods of C. Bechtler gold coinage in his Complete Encyclopedia, following the earlier scheme of Donald Kagin, who divided his listings among seven different series. This variety is from Kagin's Sixth Series.
A pleasing Mint State example that has claims to finest known status, this piece has satiny green-gold surfaces with hints of pale orange toning on both sides. As usual, the surfaces are lightly abraded, although the excellent eye appeal remains its most important trait. Listed on page 349 of the 2008 Guide Book. Population: 3 in 61, 0 finer (6/07).
From The Stephen L.
