(1837-42) $2 1/2 C. Bechtler Quarter Eagle, 64G. 22C. AU53 PCGS. K-11, R.6. Among the most widely respected Territorial mints in U.S. history, the Bechtler operation produced coins for nearly 20 years. A relatively large total of $2 million worth of coins were delivered, and, when assayed by the United States Mint, were found to be of the proper weight and fineness. A pleasing survivor from the sixth series of Bechtler production, this originally preserved, green-gold example presents very well for a circulated Territorial gold coin. True, there are some abrasions toward the centers and a couple of moderate distractions around the obverse periphery, but none of these features are overly distracting. Some original luster is also evident in the more protected areas around the devices, all of which are suitably well detailed. A rim bruise near 6 o'clock on the obverse is noted. The die break from the rim at 12 o'clock through the T in BECHTLER is diagnostic for this variety. All Bechtler Quarter Eagles are in strong demand and this high grade specimen will be no exception.
