1837<25C> MS66 NGC. B-3, High R.5. The B-3 is a very scarce variety and this piece is undoubtedly the finest known. The Condition Census as listed in the 1992 update of Browning is (60, 60, 58, 55, 55, 45). On this piece the diagnostic die crack through (D STATE)S is quite heavy, and if the crack above D connected with the rim it would be a retained cud. The obverse fields show pronounced die striations, which give that side a lovely semi-reflective glow. A lovely coin overall, the satin-like surfaces have golden centers that deepen around the margins to crimson with an occasional dab of blue interspersed. Sharply struck throughout, there are no obvious abrasions on either side of this magnificent Bust quarter. Population: 7 in 66, 0 finer (3/05).
