1837<1C> Plain Cords, Medium Letters. N-8, 7, R.1. MS62 Brown NGC. XF45 EAC. The varieties cataloged by both Frank Andrews and Howard Newcomb as their numbers 7 and 8 are now known to be from the same dies. Early states, such as the example in this lot, are the coins that were described as N-8, while later die states are typically described as N-7. See John Wright's reference for a discussion of the early and late die states. This example meets all of the qualifications for the early die state, including die engraving points and scratches over MER, at the leaf tip below ST, up from the right top of N in CENT, and elsewhere. The dentilation is bold on both sides. A die crack through TATES OF is present in all die states. Intermingled chestnut and steel-brown with traces of lighter tan color.
Ex: Kress (10/14/1970). Envelope Included.
