1837<1C> Plain Cords, Medium Letters. N-17, R.4. AU55 NGC. XF45 EAC. A lovely example from the impressive late die state. The obverse has rim breaks right of the date, and over stars 5 through 7. The reverse has a die crack beginning at the border near the final A, quickly branching into two cracks, the upper crack joining the stem end, the lower crack joining the bottom edge of the ribbon bow that protrudes downward below the wreath. The upper branch curves sharply downward within the ribbon, and rejoins the lower die crack, with the entire area inside this loop slightly sunken in the die, and raised on the coin. This forms a highly unusual internal retained cud. Retained cuds and full rim breaks are customarily limited to the edges, as they simply split away from the die. The surfaces have splendid golden-brown and mahogany color, with considerable remaining luster. A couple areas of very minor old corrosion are present on both sides.
Ex: George Ramont (5/1/1983). Envelope Included.
