1837<1C> Plain Cords, Medium Letters. N-15, R.3. MS61 Brown NGC. AU50 EAC. A scarce variety, although hardly the rarity it was once considered. This die variety was discovered by Howard Newcomb in 1940, and since that time quite a few have been located. John Wright called it R.4 in his reference, and today it is considered R.3. A delightful example for the die state collector. The obverse has a vertical crack at stars 3 and 4, along with several rim breaks at the border on the right. The reverse is heavily cracked through S OF AMERICA. Several branches extend upward to the border, and others are parallel to the main crack. The combination of N-2 and N-15, which share this obverse die, would make an interesting die state progression study.
Ex: George Ramont (10/13/1969). Envelope Included.
