1837<1C> Head of 1838. N-12, R.3. AU58 NGC. AU50 EAC. An early die state with borders, stars, legend, and other details crisp and clear. This is known as the Accessory E variety, with a stray letter E hidden in the wreath below the E of AMERICA. Jules Reiver was first to discover and report this unusual characteristic in the May 1969 issue of Penny-Wise. As he had acquired this coin less than half a year earlier, it is almost a given that this is the coin he was looking at when he saw the extra letter. The upper left and lower right serifs of the letter are clearly visible. Both sides have minimal raised verdigris and minor pitmarks with medium olive color.
Ex: George Ramont (12/26/1968). Envelope Included.
