<B>1837 10C No Stars Dime PR66 Cameo NGC.</B></I> Ex: P. Kaufman. Large Date. Greer-102. Only one coin, the Kaufman Premium Gem, has been certified as a Cameo proof by NGC. Just one numerically finer piece has been offered in recent years, a Superb Gem that does not have nearly the level of contrast seen here. <BR> Reports suggest the Philadelphia Mint produced a proof mintage of 30 coins on June 30, 1837. The survival of 25 to 30 proofs is explained by additional pieces that were coined later in the year. Most or all of these coins exist in lower grades, as they were presented to dignitaries or other VIPs who may not have known proper care. Perhaps as many as a dozen examples went to early collectors, explaining the survival of a few Gem specimens, including the following:<BR><B><BR>1. Max Mehl, 6/1947), lot 1239; John Jay Pittman (David Akers, 10/1997), lot 578.<BR></B></I><BR> The flat-topped 1 close to the base of Liberty identifies the Large Date. The 7 is recut with an extra curve at the base. Short die lines extend into the field from the border dentils over ES OF A. A short spur extends from a dentil over the left arm of the first T in STATES. These reverse characteristics are noted by Breen in his <I>Proof Encyclopedia</B></I>. He was apparently unaware that the reverse is rotated to a 200 degree die alignment (about 20 degrees clockwise from normal coin turn). At least two proofs exhibit this alignment, and perhaps all do. It is possible that this single characteristic identifies all proofs.<BR> Brilliant silver surfaces and sharp details characterize this Premium Gem proof, with a Cameo designation that alludes to impressive contrast between the fields and devices. Strong design elements exhibit full details at all points, while a partial wire rim is visible on each side.
