1837 10C No Stars, Large Date PR64 PCGS. Greer-102. Although Gobrecht dollars introduced what we would come to know as the Seated Liberty obverse in 1836, the first examples of Gobrecht's work to be coined en masse were the dimes and half dimes of 1837. This design represented a significant technological breakthrough, since the uncluttered obverse featured only the portrait of Liberty and the date--and thus the hubbed die could be completed by applying a single blow of the date logotype. According to Breen (1988), the mint struck 30 brilliant proof dimes on June 30, 1837 for presentation to Treasury officials and other VIPs in celebration of the new advances. These proofs were struck with the Large Date logotype, and are distinguishable by the spur above the first T in STATES. This piece is sharply struck and deeply toned in slate gray which extends to charcoal in some of the peripheries. The fields, although not reflective, are relatively smooth, and particularly attractive for the grade. The 7 in the date is repunched, indicative of the Greer-102 variety. Population: 5 in 64, 3 finer (11/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
