1836<PS$1> Name on Base, Judd-60 Original, Pollock-65, R.1, PR63 PCGS. Silver. Plain Edge. Die Alignment I. Original Issue of 1836 with the eagle flying upward. This piece shows no die scratch above the eagle's wing, indicating it was one of the 400 First Originals struck in December 1836. The Gobrecht dollars made in 1836 were struck on heavy weight (416.5 grain) planchets, the standard in effect since 1794. Many of these First Originals were used as presentation pieces and as a result many were well preserved both at the time of issue and subsequently. This piece has deep mirrored reflectivity in the fields. A few light hairlines are present as well as a number of small contact marks (mostly on the reverse) which account for the technical grade of the coin. Light gray-golden toning is seen over each side with blue color at the margins. An outstanding and very attractive Gobrecht dollar.
From The Melrose Bay Collection.
