1836 PS$1 Name on Base, Judd-60 Original, Pollock
1836<PS$1> Name on Base, Judd-60 Original, Pollock-65, R.2-3, Impaired Proof, Plugged, Tooled, NCS Die Alignment I. With C GOBRECHT F on the base of the rock and the eagle flying upward and onward in a field of twenty six stars. Struck with a plain edge and in coin orientation. Lacking the die scratch over the eagle's wing, this piece is an original issue of 1836, which places it in the first striking period for originals, in December of 1836. Many of these 400 First Original coins were retained at the Philadelphia Mint and used as presentation pieces, and as a result a high percentage survive today in better grades. This piece appears to have been carried as a pocket piece with smooth, even wear over the highpoints and light gray patina. The surfaces are dull gray from an old cleaning, and there is evidence of a plug in the denticles to the left of Liberty's head.
