1836<PS$1> Name on Base, Judd-60 Original, Pollock-65, R.1, PR63 NGC. Silver. Plain Edge. Die Alignment I. Original Issue of 1836 with the eagle flying upward. This coin was produced during the second striking period in December 1836 after the reverse die was inadvertently scratched above the eagle's wing. All 600 of these coins were distributed to the public via a local Philadelphia bank. On this particular coin a hairline-thin scratch extends upward from the diagnostic die scratch, making the die scratch at first appear to be much longer than it actually is. An interesting study coin in terms of striking, it is generally accepted that a Gobrecht dollar is fully struck if Liberty's foot is fully detailed. However, on this coin Liberty's foot is fully defined but the highpoint of the eagle's breast shows slight weakness as does the top of the left (facing) wing. Mostly brilliant, the fields are lightly hairlined and there are a few small contact marks on each side. The most notable mark is a spot of granularity above the 1 in the date.
