1836 PS$1 Name on Base, Judd-60 Original, Pollock-65, R.1, PR61 NGC. Silver. Plain Edge. Die Alignment I (center of Liberty's head opposite DO in DOLLAR). A so-called "First Original," struck in late December 1836. Distinguished from the coins struck earlier in December by the presence of a die scratch that angles up and to the left of the eagle's wing, apparently from unintentional damage to the reverse die between the two striking periods in that month. These pieces are usually found circulated, which makes this piece unusual and a special find for the collector of this fascinating series. The fields are deeply mirrored on each side. The surfaces show numerous hairlines, which account for the lower proof grade. The centers are untoned while the margins show deeper golden-brown and blue patina. The diagnostic die scratch is especially pronounced on this piece and can be seen without magnification.
From The Jones Beach Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
