1836<PS$1> Name on Base, Judd-60 Original, Pollock-65, R.1, PR62 PCGS. Silver. Plain Edge. Die Alignment I (with the eagle flying upward when the coin is rotated). This piece is from the Issue of December 1836, which was divided into an initial minting of 400 specimens that were likely kept at the Mint for distribution to collectors and VIPs, followed by a second issue of 600 pieces that went to a bank for distribution in the normal channels of commerce. Between those two strikings, the reverse die was scratched above the eagle's wing, so that examples from the second striking show that scratch pointing toward AT in STATES. Many survivors from the second minting are found in circulated proof condition (all known Gobrecht dollars were struck in proof, even those for general circulation), while numerous specimen strikings, apparently from the first mintage of 400 pieces, lack the die scratch.
The present example shows the die scratch plainly. It is exceptional not only for its overall appearance, but also because, despite its being in the second batch of Gobrecht dollars destined for general circulation, this piece was clearly set aside and carefully preserved soon after its production. Beautiful luster emanates from beneath the deep-gray surfaces, with flashes of electric-blue iridescence at the border. Each side shows slight evidence of contact, in the form of light field chatter, with a couple of tiny contact points on both obverse and reverse. Although long considered a pattern issue (further confused by the issuance of proof Gobrecht dollars for circulation), recent research has left little doubt that these Gobrecht dollars are regular-issue U.S. coinage, needed for completion of a full type set.
From The Troy Wiseman Collection.
