1836<PS$1> Name on Base, Judd-60 Original, Pollock-65, R.1, PR63 PCGS. Silver. Plain Edge. Die Alignment IV. Misattributed on the insert as a Judd-60 Restrike. Restrikes show no trace of the die scratch above the eagle's wing. The earlier restrikes have reverse die cracks but no evidence of die rust, while later restrikes from the 1860s and 1870s show extensive die cracks and die rust. This particular coin has a distinct die scratch over the eagle's wing, no readily discernible die cracks, and no evidence of die rust. The eagle flies level after a medal turn. All these attributes indicate that this is a Second Original struck in March 1837, after the reverse die had rotated from Die Alignment II (eagle flying upward) to Die Alignment IV (eagle flying level). Of the 600 coins reportedly struck in March 1837, approximately 400 are believed to have been produced in Die Alignment IV. Of these 400 coins, only a small number are known to exist today, and most are low grade.
This particular coin is noteworthy because of its well-preserved surfaces. The fields are deeply mirrored, as are all of these circulating proofs. Each side is covered in iridescent golden, aqua, and gray toning with much of the underlying brilliance from the fields serving to highlight the coloration. There are no singular marks on either side, just a few light hairlines beneath the toning that account for the PR63 grade.
From The New York Eye Appeal Collection.
