1836<PS$1> Name on Base, Judd-60 Original, Pollock-65, R.1, PR63 NGC. Die Alignment IV. Plain Edge. Silver. The die scratch above the eagle's wing is plainly evident and points to the AT in STATES. The reverse has a medallic alignment to the obverse and the eagle flies level, thus identifying it as a Die Alignment IV coin. These coins were produced at the end of the production run in March, 1837 after the reverse die rotated from the eagle flying upward to the level position. Approximately two out of three dollars struck in 1837 are from the rotated reverse, and most are usually found in low grades. This auction has an inordinate number of such coins in high grades. This is a splendid Gobrecht dollar. The fields are lightly hairlined but retain almost all of the original proof flash. Steel-gray and light golden toning are seen over each side with slightly deeper coloration around the margins. This piece shows not only the lunule of a previously punched 8, but there is also repunching evident on the knob of the 3, a feature we have not observed previously.
