1836<PS$1> Name on Base, Judd-60 Original, Pollock-65, R.1--Repaired--ANACS. VF20 Details. Silver. Plain Edge. Die Alignment I. Original Issue of 1836 with the eagle flying upward. We see no evidence of the die scratch above the eagle's wing that survivors from the second striking of 600 coins in December 1836 show; the lack of that die scratch places this coin in the first striking of 400 coins earlier in that same month. While many of these coins are found in high grade, this is an obvious exception. The surfaces are densely peppered with small planchet flaws. In fact, we do not remember seeing another coin of any denomination (including early copper) with as many planchet flaws as this one. Both sides are bright from cleaning with darker accents of color around the margins. The above-mentioned repair(s) are seen in the upper left obverse field, the upper right obverse field, and the lower right reverse field around the eagle's tail feathers. An affordable, entry-level Gobrecht dollar from the first striking period.
