1836 PS$1 Name on Base, Judd-60 Original, Pollock-65, R.2-3--Plugged, Cleaned--ANACS. Net PR40. Die Alignment IV. The more appropriate term for this coin is "second original." While 1836 Judd-60 Gobrecht Dollars struck in Die Alignment I are believed to be the survivors of the original 1,000-coin delivery in December 1836, those that display Die Alignment IV were produced in March of 1837. Actually, the 1836-dated Gobrecht Dollars struck in 1837 were all supposed to exhibit Die Alignment II. Some of the initial 200 coins produced actually did, but movement of a loose die resulted in several intermediate rotations before the dies finally settled on Die Alignment IV. The final 400 examples of the 600-piece 1837 delivery of Judd-60 Gobrecht Dollars is believed to have been struck with Die Alignment IV. A more affordable survivor of this issue, both sides have retoned in medium intensity golden-gray shades with subdued surfaces evident beneath. There is plenty of sharp striking detail remaining, and one can also see scattered contact marks on both sides. Holed and rather expertly plugged through the upper obverse with the affected design elements having been re-engraved over the plug. From the Dr. Richard Tavernetti Collection.
