1836 PS$1 Name on Base, Judd-60 Original, Pollock-65, R.2-3, PR40 PCGS. Silver. Plain Edge. Die Alignment I. Original Issue of 1836. Most Silver Dollar specialists are aware of the fact that the Philadelphia Mint produced 1,000 Gobrecht Dollars of this variety in December of 1836. Some may not know that this mintage was divided between two different striking periods. The initial 400 coins delivered do not display a reverse die scratch (as struck) at the top of the eagle's right wing. Since these coins were retained at the Philadelphia Mint for presentation purposes, many survivors of this delivery are in high grades. The 600 coins produced later exhibit the aforementioned reverse die scratch, and they were placed into circulation via a local Philadelphia bank. This coin does not display a die scratch in the reverse field at the top of the eagle's right wing. One's initial assessment might be that it is a survivor of the initial 400-coin delivery that was inadvertently placed into circulation, perhaps after it was presented to someone of note. There is another theory, however. The upper reverse of this coin is softly impressed, and there are several shallow planchet voids (as struck) in the field below the word OF in the legend that also affect the top of the eagle's right wing. It is possible that the die scratch did not strike up on this coin, or, if it did, it may have been lost to circulation. The wear has also resulted in some noticeable flatness over the highest points of the design, but the overall detail is sufficiently bold. Scattered abrasions and a somewhat glossy sheen are seen beneath apricot-gray patina. An interesting and rare coin that clearly begs for further study. From The Collection of Dennis Ridings.
