1836<PS$1> Name on Base, Judd-60 Original, Pollock-65, R.1, PR40 ANACS. Silver. Plain Edge. Die Alignment I, original issue of 1836. This piece illustrates the intent of the Mint when Gobrecht dollars were struck, and it is best summed up by the comment on page 45 of the new Judd book for Judd-60: "Not a pattern, but a regular issue that has been listed in the pattern series and until recent decades generally regarded as a pattern - until the history of the piece was carefully studied." Gobrecht dollars will probably continue to be misidentified as patterns as long as they are listed in the Judd book, and they probably will be listed in the Judd book for the foreseeable future for historical reasons that have nothing to do with their status as a pattern.
This particular piece has brilliantish-silvery accents over the highpoints of the central devices on each side, while there is deep blue-gray toning around the margins. Evenly worn over the design elements with no mentionable marks on either side. A very pleasing Gobrecht dollar for the grade and sure to be actively contested by type coin specialists.
From The Paulsboro Collection, Part Two.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
