1836 PS$1 Name on Base, Judd-60 Original, Pollock-65, R.1--Rim Filed, Edge Damage--NCS. Impaired Proof. Silver. Plain Edge. Die Alignment I. Original Issue of 1836. This piece lacks the die scratch at the top of the eagle's wing, which places it in the first striking period for originals, produced in December of 1836. Many of these 400 First Original coins were retained at the Philadelphia Mint and used as presentation pieces. As a result, a high percentage survive today in better grades, much better than the Second Originals struck in early 1837. This particular coin is somewhat unusual as such. It shows approximately 25 points of wear over the highpoints and there are numerous small marks scattered over each side. There is evidence of light filing on the rims, but we aren't quite sure just what is meant by "edge damage" as no damage is evident through the encasement.
