1836<PS$1> Name on Base, Judd-60 Original, Pollock-65, R.1, PR55 NGC. Silver. Plain Edge. Die Alignment I. Original Issue of 1836 with the eagle flying upward. A faint die scratch shows above the eagle's wing, pointing toward the AT of STATES. This scratch was apparently done between the first and second striking periods in late 1836, placing this coin among the 600 pieces produced in late December of that year. All these coins were proofs made for circulation, a curious anomaly itself, and all the coins from this production run were distributed through a local Philadelphia bank. As a result, survivors are generally not seen in high grades. This piece actually is one of the finer examples from this second striking period. The fields show only faint remnants of the original reflectivity and there are numerous small contact marks that are evident when the piece is closely examined with a magnifier, the most obvious of which is a squiggly, shallow scratch below the RI of AMERICA on the reverse. Each side displays medium density gray patina with faint, underlying traces of rose evident. All in all, a choice example of this highly sought out 19th century rarity.
