1836<P2C> Two Cents, Judd-56A, Pollock-58, R.8, MS63 NGC. Two-cent pattern with a spread-winged eagle on the obverse and date below. The reverse shows TWO CENTS in the center, surrounded by a laurel wreath. Struck in white metal with a reeded edge. Both the USPatterns.com website and United States Pattern Coins by Judd and edited by Bowers suggests that the white metal pieces are restrikes; however, we aren't certain that is correct as there is no evidence (at least on this piece) of having been struck from a shattered obverse die, as with the pieces that are known to be restrikes from the late 1850s. The surfaces are light gray overall with darker accents over the highpoints on each side. The coin is not especially lustrous, but then that wouldn't be expected from a white metal striking; however, there are no obvious contact marks on either side. A rare opportunity for the pattern specialist.
From The Western Hills Collection.
