1836 P2C Two Cents, Judd-53, Pollock-54, Low
1836 P2C Two Cents, Judd-52, Pollock-55, Low R.6, MS65 NGC. An early, small diameter two cent pattern with a spread-winged eagle on the obverse and date below. The reverse features TWO CENTS in the center, surrounded by a laurel wreath. Struck in billon (90% copper, 10% silver), often confused with copper-nickel, and given a reeded edge. Approximately two dozen examples are believed known of this pattern, but we have not offered these at public auction in numbers that support an estimated population that high. Like the coin we offered in our February 2006 Long Beach Auction, NGC has called this piece Mint State. Yet, when we examine the surfaces they appear consistent with a proof striking, including reflective fields. Medallic alignment, the surfaces are toned in streaks of deep gray patina and the piece has an evenly balanced appearance from side to side.
From The Madison Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
