1836 P$1 Name on Base, Judd-60 Restrike, Pollock-65, R.5, PR62 NGC. Die Alignment IV (eagle flying level). Plain Edge. Silver. This short-lived type best exemplifies Christian Gobrecht's original vision for the Seated Liberty design, with the uncluttered starless obverse and dramatic flying eagle. The obverse would come into common usage with half dimes and dimes beginning in 1837 (indeed, although dated 1836, this coin was also likely struck in 1837), while the flying eagle motif would not surface on a US circulating coin until the introduction of the Flying Eagle cent twenty years later. Struck only as proofs, many Gobrecht dollars nonetheless served some time in circulation, and while all Gobrecht dollars are prized today, those with no wear, such as the present piece, are especially coveted. This coin is toned in varying shades of gray and sepia, with bright silver highlights illuminating Liberty's hair and the eagle. The polished surfaces bear only light surface markings, which result in a pleasing overall effect. Likely destined for an outstanding type set.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
