1836 P$1 Name on Base, Judd-60 Original,
1836 P$1 Name on Base, Judd-60 Original, Pollock-65, R.1, PR55 ANACS. Silver. Plain Edge. Die Alignment IV (medallic turn, center of Liberty's head opposite right side of F in OF). Sometimes called Second Original strikings, these coins were struck in March 1837, even though they are dated 1836. Struck as circulating proofs, as were all Gobrecht dollars. There were 600 March strikings, and as has been often told, the coins began in Die Alignment II (medal alignment, Liberty's head opposite the DO in DOLLAR). Apparently, the reverse die was loose and during the production run slowly rotated from the eagle in the “onward and upward” position to level (as in this case with the Die Alignment IV coins).
This is a lightly handled proof whose fields retain almost all of the original reflectivity. Well detailed throughout, with just the slightest bit of highpoint friction. Close examination shows a few widely scattered field marks, but the only mentionable abrasions are a couple of short, shallow digs in the obverse field, near the rim at 3 o'clock. Light gray patina covers most of each side except the peripheries, which show lovely iridescence.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
