<Our item number 100111>1836 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded edge. NGC graded Proof 63. Needle sharp with bluish-grey toning. Both sides are remarkably lustrous with the silvery luster overlaid by a thin veil of color; best of all, the devices are nicely struck with just outstanding detail at the hair curls and feather details.

The Mint had been using stem power presses to strike Cents in 1835; the first Half Dollars were made on the new presses in November 8, 1836. Some Proofs were made first. Mint Director Levi Woodbury sent some, if not all of these specimens to Secretary of the Treasury Levi Woodbury. The Proofs were followed by approximately 1,200 business strikes, of which this is a choice example. The limited original mintage explains the fact that the 1836 is one of the most eagerly sought, key-date issues in the entire U.S. Half Dollar series. Pop 3; 5 finer; 3 in 64; 2 in 65.
Estimated Value $25,000-27,500.
The Greenhill Collection.

Our item number 100 111
<IMAGES>

</IMAGES>
