Well struck and overlaid with uniform medium grayish-violet toning on both sides. Rare low mintage date as a mere 1,200 or so were coined. The year 1836 would become one of major importance in the history of the Philadelphia Mint. Lettered edge Half Dollars, such as the design replaced by this Reeded Edge version, had been in production since minting began in 1794. By the early 1830s, however, growing bottlenecks appeared as the Mint was called upon to strike ever larger quantities of coins each year. New equipment was introduced in 1836 using steam-operated presses for the first time, like the presses used in Britain and Europe. At the same time the switch was made to "close" (as opposed to open or "wide") collars to enable a more consistent strike. As this attractive 1836 Reeded Edge half dollar shows the changes achieved their purpose. Pop 5; 5 finer with 3 in 6 4, 2 in 65 (PCGS # 6175).
Estimated Value $13,000 - 15,000.

Our item number 139652
<IMAGES>

</IMAGES>
