1836 50C Reeded Edge PR63 PCGS. 1836 Reeded Edge halves are famous as business strikes as only 1,200 pieces were minted. These pieces are widely sought out by collectors in all grades as the first examples of the new half dollar type and the first mass-produced denomination on steam presses. These halves are occasionally available in a wide range of grades, and are always of interest to collectors.
However, little thought is given to the proofs known of this date and type as they are so rare that most collectors have overlooked them. In fact, many do not even know of their existence. Estimates vary from 10 to 12 proofs struck of the 1836. This piece is among the finest known. The fields have a confirmed reflectivity that is plentifully evident through the multiple layers of purple, golden, and blue toning that are splashed over each side. The striking details are strong, but lack absolute fullness, apparently a common trait among several of the known proof 1836 halves. Mint officials were obviously unfamiliar with the striking pressure necessary with the new steam press to completely bring up all the details on these pieces. However, this piece is much stronger defined than the Garrett-Auction '80 coin. Diagnostically correct also, there is a short die crack to the right of the final S in STATES that is present on all genuine proofs of this issue, a trait that is also present on business strikes but is significantly longer on those later strikings.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
