1836<50C> Reeded Edge PR62 PCGS. On November 8, 1836, Mint Director Robert Maskell Patterson presented ten specimen strikings of the new Reeded Edge Half Dollar to Treasury Secretary Levi Woodbury. According to Patterson, the specimens, or proofs, were intended to show the superior striking quality of the new steam press/closed collar combination. The final proof mintage is unknown, but is likely that more than 10 pieces were eventually struck. This flashy piece exhibits moderate plum and apple-green toning. The surfaces are clean for the grade, although the neck and left obverse field display faint mint-made laminations. A tiny obverse rim nick at 1:30 and slight softness of strike on peripheral elements are also noted. The minute die crack that extends from the rim into the field between STATES and OF is diagnostic for this proof issue. Certified in an early generation PCGS holder.
From The Albert E.
