1836[50C] Reeded Edge MS65 PCGS.
1836<50C> Reeded Edge MS65 PCGS. This classic American coinage issue marked the beginning of a new era in coinage with the implementation of the first steam-powered coinage press at the Philadelphia Mint. Approximately 1,200 examples of this reeded edge half dollar were produced, the very first coins minted from this press. From a technological viewpoint, this new press provided an important step forward for the American government. The uniformity of coinage reached a higher level than at any previous time. This mathematical precision accomplished many objectives, one of these being a reduction in counterfeiting, as those in that business were unable to obtain such precision. (The actual press that produced these coins is currently on display at the headquarters of the American Numismatic Association in Colorado Springs, Colorado.)
This is the finest 1836 Reeded Edge half dollar to be certified by either PCGS or NGC. Each of these grading services has certified one example at this grade level. NGC has also graded two coins as Proof-65 while PCGS has never graded a Proof example above PR64 grade. All of this data suggests to us that the present specimen is possibly the finest numerical 1836 Reeded Edge half dollar in existence. This example has frosty silver luster with a light wash of pale gold. The stars at right obverse are weakly defined, while all other design details on both sides are boldly rendered.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
