1836 50C Reeded Edge MS62 PCGS. This coin was formerly offered as lot 6250 in our May-June 2001 sale of the Alex Highland Collection (part of our Long Beach Signature Sale), where it was described as: "The introduction of steam powered presses at the Philadelphia Mint prompted Christian Gobrecht to substantially modify John Reich's hardy Capped Bust Half Dollar. The new design, which was introduced in 1836, was produced in a closed collar that gave the Half Dollar a reeded edge for the first time since the denomination's introduction in 1794. A mere 1,200 Reeded Edge Half Dollars were produced in 1836, and, with the exception of the 1838-O, this issue is the key to this short-lived type. We have no doubt that this coin is completely original. Rich lavender-charcoal toning envelops both sides with brighter golden-blue undertones evident at certain angles. The surfaces are remarkably smooth for the grade, and we will even say that, were the luster a little more vibrant, this coin would probably warrant a Choice grade. There is a little light striking softness near the top of Liberty's portrait on the obverse and over the bottom of the eagle's portrait on the reverse, but these features are not distracting in any way." The coin brought $9,487.50 in that sale. From the Trane Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
