1836<50C> Reeded Edge AU55 PCGS. A well struck and distraction-free example of this historic coinage, the first issue in U.S. numismatics to be struck on the Mint's new steam press. Numismatic scholars and researchers have spilled much ink debating whether these coins were regular issues or patterns: They are listed in the Judd pattern reference and on www.uspatterns.com, but many authorities believe they are regular issues (possibly made later than 1836), and most of the known examples are circulated. This example shows lovely dove-gray surfaces and a generally pleasing strike, with weakness on the eagle's claws. A tick above the eagle's head is noted. Just a touch of rub away from Mint State, certified in a green-label holder. Population: 17 in 55, 37 finer (7/06).
