1836 $5 MS64 PCGS. Breen-6508, Second H
1836<$5> MS64 PCGS. Breen-6508, Second Head, Small Date, McCloskey 5-D, R.3. The variety is confirmed by the wide rounded end to the truncation, the double forelock, the 1 in the date at the same level as the 8, and the large 5 in the denomination. With a mintage of 553,147 pieces, the 1836 is one of the most common dates of the Classic Head design type. Mint State pieces are available through the MS62 level, but the population begins to taper off in MS63. Slightly more than 30 near-Gems have been certified by PCGS and NGC to date, and a mere two pieces finer.
The design elements on the MS64 specimen offered here display a better-than-average strike. The hair curls at Liberty's forehead and temple, while not quite full, still show nice definition. Peach-gold surfaces display a semi-bright, satiny sheen, and are imbued with subtle light green undertones. Some minute handling marks on Liberty's cheek and neck and in the left (facing) obverse field define the grade. A few wispy unobtrusive hairlines are mentioned solely for accuracy, and do not in the least detract from the coin's great eye appeal. Population: 20 in 64, 1 finer (2/06).
