Excellence seems to be the watchword in this sale, and the presently offered 1836 $5 add force to that. While there are an adequate number of 1836 half eagles in numismatic collections, only a few that we have ever offered equal the choice appearance and overall quality of this Mint State 63. The obverse has a nice strike, with hair details clear, the stars full, the denticles complete, and the date bold -- the focus of the design. The reverse, perhaps even more splendidly, maintains this model of strike completeness --what with the eagle's wing detailed, the leaves in the olive branch crisp including leaf veins, the arrowheads showing all their features, the dentils complete, and everything else. As if this were not enough, the fields are frosty gold and lustrous with only a few light handling marks. If this piece had been certified as MS-64 we would have agreed.
