1836<$2 1/2> Script 8 MS63 PCGS. McCloskey-D Head of 1835, Breen-6143, R.2. Christian Gobrecht finished the dies for these interesting and historic coins from date and device punches that Mint Engraver William Kneass had produced before suffering a stroke. This most plentiful 1836 variety features a small curl adjacent to star 6, and, like many seen, exhibits the pronounced die crack running from rim to rim from star 6 to the space between stars 12 and 13. The surfaces are extremely lustrous, with blushes of reddish-orange patina more dominant on the reverse. Minor softness in the centers is noted on Liberty's hair curls and the eagle's left shield, as often seen. Population: 31 in MS63, 16 finer (10/05).
