1836 $2 1/2 Script 8 AU58 NGC. Head of 1835, Breen-6143, McCloskey-D, R.2. Although this is the most common die pairing, there are four variants for the 1836 quarter eagles:
--Head of 1834, Breen-6147, McCloskey-E, R.7;
--Head of 1835, Breen-6143, McCloskey-D, R.2;
--Head of 1835, Breen-6143, McCloskey-G, R.4; and
--Head of 1835, Breen-6143, McCloskey-H, R.4,
of widely varying rarities, as can be seen. There is also a rare proof Unlisted Obverse Die, Script 8, Reverse of Variety G (AM widely spaced). R.8, of which two pieces are known (Heritage, 1/2007), lot 3104. This series makes a fascinating study of early U.S. gold at fairly reasonable prices. The present piece displays pretty, lustrous yellow-gold surfaces with a couple of light abrasions consistent with the grade.

Coin Engraver: William Kneass

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
