1836 $2 1/2 Block 8 MS63 PCGS. Head of 1837. Breen-6144, McCloskey-C, R.3. Using gold from melted down old tenor coins and French indemnity payments, the Philadelphia Mint delivered 547,986 Classic Quarter Eagles in 1836. Three distinct hub varieties are known, with the Head of 1837 considerably more difficult to locate than the Head of 1835, which is the most common. The present type is usually found softly struck on the obverse above Liberty's ear and on the reverse shield. This coin displays these features, but it also possesses pleasing frosty luster and a modest glow in the fields. Green-gold and orange-gold colors are both in evidence, and the scattered abrasions do not include any individually distracting blemishes. Rollermarks (as produced) are noted on the reverse over the bottom of the eagle. PCGS reports just nine 1836 Block 8 Quarter Eagles in MS63, and there are only seven finer (9/02).
