1836/1336<50C> Lettered Edge PR64 Cameo PCGS. O-108. An unequivocal proof striking with glassy fields and razor sharp definition. Breen lists several die marriages for the 1836 Lettered Edge Half Dollar struck as proofs, among these O-116 (50/00 Reverse) which includes the extraordinary Eliasberg specimen, O-102, O-106, and this pairing, which is perhaps the most intriguing variety since it involves an overdate, O-108.
A specimen in the Stack's 1976 ANA Sale identified by Breen as an O-108 was sold as lot 1160. The coin was described as having "... periphery with smoky russet toning. A few marks in the field and some slight spotting at the cap. Overall a beautiful, dazzling specimen and one of the very few we have ever seen." While we cannot positively identify this specimen as being the '76 ANA piece, it does have a far better chance of matching than the PR63 sold in our 1994 ANA Sale as lot 6573.
The devices of this dazzling specimen are struck with remarkable precision over the entirety of the coin and the overdate feature is crystal clear under light magnification. Several wispy, raised die lines, also seen on the 1994 ANA piece, glance across Liberty's neck. Minute contact marks on Liberty's cheek are directly across from her mouth. While basically untoned across the interior of the obverse and framed in natural russet hues, the reverse is cloaked in a mottled, milky patina that in no way diminishes the substantial underlying reflectivity. An important opportunity for the advanced Bust Half Dollar or early 19th Century Proof collector. Population: 1 in 64, 1 finer (11/05).
